What you'll gain
Trains the full trunk flexion range with more resistance than a floor sit-up.
Adjusts difficulty by bench angle, so one station serves several ability levels.
Loads easily with a plate or dumbbell held across the chest when bodyweight stops challenging.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
Set a decline bench and secure both feet under the padded roller.
- 2
Lie back with your knees bent and your arms crossed over your chest.
- 3
Tuck your chin lightly toward your chest to protect the neck.
- 4
Exhale and curl your torso up until your chest travels toward your thighs.
- 5
Pause briefly at the top with the abdominals fully shortened.
- 6
Lower yourself back to the bench under control and repeat.
Common Mistakes
Yanking on the head or neck to start the rep, which strains the cervical spine.
Letting the hip flexors pull the torso up first, which leaves the abdominals barely loaded.
Dropping back onto the bench at speed, which discards the eccentric and jars the spine.
Choosing a steep decline before the movement is controlled, which forces momentum-driven reps.
About This Exercise
The decline sit-up is performed head-down on an angled bench with the feet locked under a padded roller. Unlike a crunch, the torso travels all the way up until the chest approaches the thighs, so the movement combines trunk flexion from the abdominals with hip flexion driven by the hip flexors and rectus femoris. The decline angle adds resistance at the bottom of the range where the abdominals are longest, and steeper settings make the exercise harder without any added weight. Tucking the chin protects the neck through the top of the rep. As an asset this clip is the full-range counterpart to the decline crunch, and libraries usually want both. It fits abdominal blocks in app programs, bench equipment collections, and weighted progression ladders where a plate or dumbbell is added later.

Abdominals Stretch Variation One
$4.99A floor-based ab stretch that rises from forearm support into a cobra-style press-up to open the front of the core.
Abdominals Stretch Variation Three
$4.99A standing one-arm overhead side bend that lengthens the obliques and opens the side of the core.
Abdominals Stretch Variation Two
$4.99A standing bilateral arm sweep to overhead that opens the front of the torso through mild spinal extension.
Bird Dog
$4.99A quadruped core drill that extends one arm and the opposite leg while the trunk resists rotation and extension.
Bodyweight Deadlift
$4.99An unloaded hip hinge that teaches the deadlift pattern — the safest way to learn how to bend, brace, and stand back up.
Bodyweight Russian Twist
$4.99A seated rotational core exercise that twists side to side — the most recognizable oblique builder in any ab program.
