Romanian Deadlift from Deficit
What you'll gain
The small platform lengthens the eccentric so the hamstrings work through more stretch.
Teaches the same hip hinge as a standard RDL without pulling from the floor.
A lighter load still provides a hard posterior-chain stimulus because the range is longer.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
Stand with each foot on a low plate, feet about hip width, holding a barbell against the thighs.
- 2
Lock the hips and knees at the top, brace the trunk, and set the shoulder blades back.
- 3
Push the hips back and slide the bar down the front of the legs.
- 4
Keep only a slight knee bend and the bar in contact with the legs.
- 5
Stop where the hamstrings run out of stretch, then drive the hips forward to stand tall.
- 6
Finish stacked at the top without leaning back, and repeat.
Common Mistakes
Rounding the lower back to chase extra depth the hamstrings cannot control.
Bending the knees into a squat, which unloads the hinge the deficit is there to lengthen.
Letting the bar drift off the legs, which lengthens the lever on the lumbar spine.
Using plates so high that the extra range cannot be owned with a neutral spine.
About This Exercise
A deficit Romanian deadlift is the same hip hinge as a standard RDL, started from a few centimeters of elevation under each foot. You stand tall with the bar against the thighs, push the hips back, and slide the bar down the legs with only a slight knee bend. The extra height lets the bar travel past where the plates would have hit the floor, so the hamstrings take a longer eccentric stretch before you drive the hips forward to stand. The knees stay soft; this is not a pull from the floor. For a catalog the clip is the long-range partner to a regular barbell RDL. It fits posterior-chain blocks, barbell filters, and technique pages that show how a small platform changes hinge depth.
