What you'll gain
Allows heavier overhead loading than a strict press by adding leg drive.
Trains the transfer of force from the lower body through a braced trunk to the arms.
Loads each side independently, so side to side differences cannot hide.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
Stand with feet hip-width apart and bring a dumbbell to each shoulder with the palms facing in.
- 2
Brace your abdominals and glutes and keep the torso vertical.
- 3
Dip a few inches by bending the knees while keeping the chest tall and the elbows up.
- 4
Reverse the dip explosively by extending the ankles, knees and hips.
- 5
Let the leg drive carry the dumbbells up, then finish the lockout with the shoulders and triceps.
- 6
Lower the dumbbells back to the shoulders and absorb the load with soft knees.
Common Mistakes
Dipping too deep, which turns the movement into a squat and kills the elastic drive.
Leaning the torso forward in the dip, which sends the dumbbells out in front of the shoulders.
Starting the press with the arms before the legs finish, which wastes the leg drive entirely.
Catching the dumbbells on locked legs, which sends the impact straight into the knees and spine.
About This Exercise
The dumbbell push press starts with the weights racked at the shoulders and adds a short, sharp dip and drive from the legs. That leg extension accelerates the dumbbells past the hardest part of the press, after which the deltoids and triceps finish the lockout overhead. Because each arm is loaded independently, the trunk has to resist side to side movement as well as the extension the overhead load creates. The dip is shallow and vertical; turning it into a squat removes the elastic drive the movement depends on. For an asset library this is a power-biased pressing clip that pairs with the strict press to show the difference leg drive makes. It fits conditioning and power blocks in app programs, dumbbell equipment collections, and technique comparison media.

Arnold Press
$4.99A seated dumbbell press that starts with the palms facing you and rotates them forward as the weight goes overhead.
Cuban Press
$4.99A three-phase dumbbell drill that links an upright row, an external rotation and an overhead press in one rep.
Dumbbell Front Raise
$4.99A standing dumbbell raise to shoulder height that isolates the front delts in a clean, controlled arc.
Dumbbell Incline Front Raise
$4.99A front raise performed face-down on an incline bench — isolates the front shoulders through a fuller range than the standing version.
Dumbbell Lateral Raise
$4.99A standing dumbbell raise out to the sides — the foundational isolation for the side delts and shoulder width.
Dumbbell Laying Reverse Fly
$4.99A chest-down reverse fly on an incline bench that isolates the rear delts and upper back without lower-back strain.
