What you'll gain

  • Loads the upper chest without balancing a bar or dumbbells overhead.

  • Guided arc makes it a safe way to train close to failure without a spotter.

  • Seat adjustment lets the same machine serve very different body proportions.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

Adjust the seat so the handles sit just below shoulder height and load the machine.

  2. 2

Sit back against the pad with your feet planted and your hips square in the seat.

  3. 3

Grip the handles with palms facing forward and set your shoulder blades down and back.

  4. 4

Exhale and press the handles up and forward until your elbows are nearly straight.

  5. 5

Hold the top position briefly without locking the elbows out hard.

  6. 6

Lower the handles under control until your chest feels a stretch, then repeat.

Common Mistakes

  • Starting with the handles above shoulder height turns the exercise into a shoulder press and loads the deltoids instead.

  • Letting the shoulder blades slide forward as you press puts the front of the shoulder under avoidable strain.

  • Pushing the head and upper back off the pad to move more weight shortens the range and stresses the neck.

  • Dropping the handles back quickly wastes the eccentric, which is where much of the chest stimulus comes from.

About This Exercise

The incline machine chest press drives the handles up and away from the body along a fixed arc. The pectoralis major remains the prime mover with a bias toward its clavicular, upper portion, while the deltoids and triceps take a larger share than in a flat press. EMG work on bench inclination supports the pattern: upper pectoral activity peaks near thirty degrees, and beyond forty-five degrees the anterior deltoid takes over. The machine removes the balance and unracking demands of a barbell incline press, so beginners can hold shoulder blade retraction and press through a full range with no spotter. As an asset this is the machine counterpart to incline barbell and dumbbell pressing. It fits machine equipment filters, upper-chest accessory slots and beginner chest programs.
