What you'll gain

  • The bent knee shifts work onto the soleus, which straight-leg calf work under-trains.

  • One dumbbell per leg replaces a dedicated seated calf machine.

  • The seated position removes balance, so the ankle can move through full range.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

Sit on a bench or box with your feet flat and your knees bent to about 90 degrees.

  2. 2

Rest a dumbbell vertically on each thigh, close to the knee.

  3. 3

Hold the dumbbells steady with your hands and sit tall.

  4. 4

Place the balls of your feet on a low block if you have one.

  5. 5

Let your heels drop until the calves are fully stretched.

  6. 6

Push through the balls of your feet, squeeze at the top and lower slowly.

Common Mistakes

  • Cutting the bottom short, which skips the stretched range the calves respond to.

  • Bouncing each rep, which lets the tendon do the work instead of the muscle.

  • Resting the dumbbells on the knee joint, which is uncomfortable and shifts the load.

  • Rolling onto the toes at the top, which strains the forefoot without adding range.

About This Exercise

The seated calf raise works plantar flexion with the knee bent to roughly a right angle. In this version the load is a dumbbell resting across the thigh just behind the knee, with the forefoot on the floor or a low block. Heels drop into a full stretch, then push up as high as the ankle allows. The bent knee shortens the gastrocnemius so the soleus takes the larger share; with the knee straight the gastrocnemius sits at long length and does more. Training data shows far greater gastrocnemius growth from knee-extended calf work, while soleus growth is similar either way. For a catalog the seated variant is the partner to a standing calf raise, and dumbbell loading keeps it available to home users with no calf station. It fits dumbbell filters and calf specialization blocks.
