Single-Leg Balance (Ankle Proprioception)

What you'll gain

  • Trains the sense of where the ankle sits in space, which a sprain degrades.

  • Exposes left-to-right differences that two-footed exercises hide.

  • Needs no equipment and almost no space, so it fits a warm-up or a rehab block.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

Stand tall with your feet under your hips and your weight even through both feet.

  2. 2

Fix your eyes on a spot on the floor a few feet in front of you.

  3. 3

Shift your weight onto one foot and lift the other foot clear of the floor.

  4. 4

Bring the lifted knee up in front of you and keep your hips level.

  5. 5

Hold while breathing normally and letting the ankle make small corrections.

  6. 6

Lower the foot under control, return to standing, and repeat on the other leg.

Common Mistakes

  • Letting the free hip drop, which shifts the work off the standing glute.

  • Clawing at the floor with the toes instead of balancing over the whole foot.

  • Leaning the torso toward the standing leg to shorten the balance demand.

  • Progressing to eyes closed or an unstable surface before a steady hold is possible.

About This Exercise

Single-leg balance is a quiet standing hold: one foot stays planted, the other thigh lifts about to hip height, and the ankle, hip, and trunk make the constant small corrections that keep you there. The stance glute and quadriceps keep the pelvis level; the calves, hamstrings, adductors, and abdominal wall share the job of not letting the free hip drop. Nothing about it looks like training until it is tried on a tired or previously injured leg. The approved clip is bodyweight, no board or cushion, arms slightly out, opposite knee up. In a catalog it is the entry point for the single-leg family: ankle proprioception, fall-prevention screens, and a warm-up hold before loaded single-leg work.
