Standing Alternating Dumbbell Press
What you'll gain
Lets each shoulder work on its own while the other side holds a racked load.
The standing stance asks the trunk to resist side bend without a bench.
Keeps the same overhead path as a two-arm press, so it slots into existing push programs.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
Stand tall with feet about hip to shoulder width and a pair of dumbbells at the shoulders.
- 2
Turn the palms forward so the handles sit just outside the shoulders, elbows down.
- 3
Brace the trunk so the ribs stay stacked and the low back does not arch.
- 4
Press one dumbbell overhead until the elbow is long, the other bell staying at the shoulder.
- 5
Lower that bell to the rack, then press the opposite arm.
- 6
Keep the head quiet and the torso upright as you alternate.
Common Mistakes
Rotating the palms from facing in to facing forward; this clip is a palms-forward press, not an Arnold press.
Leaning or hiking the hip toward the working side as that arm goes up.
Pressing both bells together; the pattern is one arm, then the other.
Letting the head jut forward or the low back dump as the bell reaches lockout.
About This Exercise
The standing alternating dumbbell press is an overhead press done one arm at a time. Both bells start at the shoulders; one arm extends overhead, then lowers, then the other arm goes. The two-arm standing press page targets shoulders, lists triceps as secondary, uses dumbbells, and grades the parent pattern beginner. A one-arm alternating page uses the same standing rack and presses one bell while the other stays put; that page's grip is palms in. The clip keeps palms forward. The approved still shows both bells racked, palms forward, neither arm overhead yet. That is the start of an alternating cycle, not an Arnold press. For apps this is the unilateral standing press: useful in shoulder blocks, left-right imbalance work, and standing push collections.

Built for
- Shoulder blocks that need a unilateral standing press next to a two-arm version.
- Push templates that flag left-right differences in overhead strength.
- Standing dumbbell collections where a seated press would hide trunk demand.
- App libraries that already ship a simultaneous standing press and need the alternating sibling.
