Standing Dumbbell Press
What you'll gain
Builds overhead pressing strength with independent arms, so one side cannot hide.
The standing stance asks the trunk to stay stacked without a bench.
Uses a full overhead path that seated or barbell versions can shorten.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
Stand with feet about shoulder width and a dumbbell in each hand.
- 2
Raise the bells to shoulder height and turn the palms forward.
- 3
Brace the trunk so the ribs stay down and the low back does not dump.
- 4
Press both dumbbells overhead until the elbows are long, without clashing the bells.
- 5
Lower both bells back to the shoulders under control.
- 6
Keep the head quiet and the path vertical as you repeat.
Common Mistakes
Letting the head jut forward as the bells reach the top.
Arching the low back to finish the lockout instead of bracing the trunk.
Turning the palms in; this clip is a palms-forward press.
Locking the elbows so hard that tension leaves the shoulders at the top.
About This Exercise
The standing dumbbell press is the two-arm overhead press done on the feet. The library page targets shoulders, lists triceps as secondary, requires dumbbells, uses a push force, and grades it beginner. Palms start facing forward at shoulder height; both bells travel overhead, then lower to about a right angle at the elbow. A second library names front deltoid as primary with triceps and side deltoid helping, and notes the standing version raises trunk demand versus a seated press. The approved still is a front view with both hex bells at the shoulders, palms forward, elbows out, neither arm locked out. Distinct from the alternating sibling (one arm at a time) and from the palms-in sibling (neutral grip). For apps this is the default standing dumbbell press in shoulder and push libraries.
