Standing Wall Shoulder Opening Stretch

What you'll gain

  • Opens the front shoulder and chest after pressing or desk work.

  • Uses only a wall, so it fits cool-downs in any room.

  • The one-arm setup lets each side be dosed on its own.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

Stand beside a wall, feet planted, spine tall.

  2. 2

Reach one arm straight out at shoulder height and plant that palm flat on the wall.

  3. 3

Keep the elbow locked and the planted shoulder down, not shrugged.

  4. 4

Rotate the chest away from the planted hand until the front of that shoulder and chest open.

  5. 5

Keep the free arm relaxed at the ribs and the feet still.

  6. 6

    Hold, then switch arms.

Common Mistakes

  • Bending the planted elbow; this clip keeps the arm straight.

  • Facing the wall square-on instead of standing beside it and turning away.

  • Shrugging the planted shoulder up toward the ear.

  • Arching the low back to fake more opening instead of rotating the chest.

About This Exercise

This wall opener is a single-arm chest and front-shoulder stretch. An accredited guide describes a bent-arm wall version: palm and inner arm on a wall or doorway at shoulder height, elbow bent to about 90 degrees, then the chest presses through. A second library's straight-arm chest stretch plants an extended hand on a fixed structure at shoulder height and turns the body away. The approved clip is that straight-arm sibling: one palm flat on a wall slab, elbow locked, torso rotated away from the planted hand, free arm at the ribs. The still is a three-quarter back view, wall-side front deltoid red and the same-side pec pink. The wall is architecture, not a listed implement, so equipment is Bodyweight. For apps it is the standing wall pec and shoulder opener for desk posture and pressing cool-downs, not the bent-elbow doorway hold.

A one-arm wall stretch: the palm plants at shoulder height and the chest turns away so the front shoulder opens.
