Banded Monster Walk
What you'll gain
Loads the gluteus medius while you walk, not only while you lie on your side.
Reinforces knee tracking under band tension before squats and runs.
Scales with band strength and placement, from above the knees to the ankles.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
Loop a mini band around both ankles, just above the feet.
- 2
Drop into a quarter squat with the hips back, knees out, and hands clasped in front of the chest.
- 3
Step one foot diagonally forward and out, keeping tension in the band.
- 4
Bring the trailing foot forward without letting the feet snap together or cross.
- 5
Continue for the planned steps, then reverse the pattern walking backward.
- 6
Stay in the quarter squat for the whole set and keep the toes pointing forward.
Common Mistakes
Standing up out of the quarter squat as soon as the set starts.
Letting the feet snap together and losing band tension between steps.
Taking giant strides that pull the trunk sideways instead of small controlled steps.
Turning the toes out so the band rolls and the knees cave.
About This Exercise
The banded monster walk is a glute-med prep drill done in an athletic quarter squat. A mini band sits around both ankles, the knees stay pushed out, and you take short forward steps without letting the feet snap together. After a set distance you reverse and walk backward on the same line. It is accessory prep for the lateral hips, especially the gluteus medius, because the band keeps a constant abduction demand while you move. The same banded hip-abduction family (clamshells into lateral walks) is used to wake the glute med before larger lower-body work. For a catalog this is the moving cousin of the clamshell: still a band, still the outer hip, but now in a gait pattern. It fits warm-up blocks, running-prep flows, and band equipment filters.
