What you'll gain
Loads the triceps long head in a stretched position that pushdowns do not reach.
Constant cable tension through the whole elbow extension range.
Carries over to lockout strength in bench and overhead pressing.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
Attach a rope to a high pulley and select a moderate weight.
- 2
Grip both ends with a neutral grip and turn away from the stack.
- 3
Take a split stance and bring the rope behind your head with the elbows bent.
- 4
Hinge slightly forward at the hips and brace your abs.
- 5
Extend your elbows to drive the rope forward and slightly apart.
- 6
Stop just short of lockout, then lower back into the stretch under control.
Common Mistakes
Letting the elbows flare and travel, which turns the extension into a press.
Arching the lower back as the cable pulls, which loads the spine instead of the triceps.
Locking out hard at the top, which hands the tension to the elbow joint.
Choosing a weight that pulls you backwards, so the stance rather than the arms controls the rep.
About This Exercise
The cable rope overhead tricep extension attaches a rope high on the stack, then has you turn away, hold both ends behind your head and hinge slightly forward in a split stance. With the shoulder flexed, the long head of the triceps is already lengthened, which is why overhead variations bias that head more than a pushdown does. You extend the elbows and squeeze without locking out hard, keeping the upper arms still so the movement stays at the elbow. The abs work through the set to stop the cable pulling the lower back into an arch. As an asset this is the long head biased triceps clip that complements a pushdown in the same library. It fits arm accessory blocks, bench press support work in strength programs, and teaching content on how shoulder position changes triceps emphasis.

Cable Bar Pushdown
$4.99A standing triceps pushdown using a straight bar attachment — the most efficient way to isolate the triceps with cables.
Cable Rope Pushdown
$4.99A standing triceps pushdown using a rope attachment that lets the hands separate for a deeper triceps squeeze.
Cable Single Arm Rope Pushdown
$4.99A one-arm rope pushdown that isolates each triceps independently for a deeper squeeze and better symmetry.
Machine Cable V Bar Push Downs
$4.99A V-bar cable pushdown that isolates all three heads of the triceps through a clean, controlled extension.
Reverse-Grip Tricep Pushdown
$4.99A cable pushdown taken with the palms up, keeping the elbows tucked so the triceps extend the arm through a long range.
Single-Arm Overhead Cable Extension
$4.99A standing single-arm cable extension with the handle held overhead, straightening the elbow against constant tension.
