Dumbbell Halo
What you'll gain
Moves the shoulders and mid-back through a circle that pressing warm-ups often skip.
A braced trunk turns the halo into a stability drill as well as a mobility drill.
Works with a single dumbbell, so it fits home and travel setups.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
Stand with the feet about hip width and hold one dumbbell by both ends in front of the chest.
- 2
Brace the trunk and keep the ribs stacked over the pelvis.
- 3
Move the dumbbell in a tight circle around the head, passing it behind the crown.
- 4
Keep both hands closed on the same two ends for the whole circle.
- 5
Return to the front of the chest and reverse the direction.
- 6
Repeat slow, even circles without leaning the torso to make range.
Common Mistakes
Drawing a wide orbit that lets the torso side-bend instead of the shoulders rotating.
Arching the lower back to sneak the bell behind the neck.
Holding the breath, which stiffens the ribcage the thoracic spine needs to move.
Using a bell so heavy that the path jerks and clips the head.
About This Exercise
The dumbbell halo traces a tight circle around the head with both hands on one bell. You start in front of the chest, pass the weight up one side, behind the crown, down the other side, and back to the front without letting the bell clip the skull. The deltoids and upper back steer the path; the trunk stays quiet so the motion stays in the shoulders and thoracic spine rather than in a side bend. A light bell is enough. The tighter the halo, the more control the shoulders have to show. For a catalog this is a shoulder mobility clip that also belongs in warm-ups before pressing. App builders can drop it into kettlebell-style prep blocks even when the only tool on screen is a dumbbell.

Anti-Gravity Press
$4.99A chest-supported dumbbell press performed face down on an incline bench, extending both arms forward before returning.
Single-Arm Dumbbell Overhead Press
$4.99A standing overhead press with one dumbbell, so each shoulder works alone while the trunk resists bending sideways.
Standing Alternating Dumbbell Press
$4.99A standing overhead press with both dumbbells racked, then one arm presses while the other stays at the shoulder.
Standing Dumbbell Press
$4.99A standing two-arm overhead press: palms-forward dumbbells leave the shoulders together and return together.
Standing Palms-In Dumbbell Press
$4.99A standing overhead press with palms facing each other, so the bells travel in a closer, more forward path.
Z Press
$4.99Overhead press performed seated on the floor with the legs straight, so the trunk gets no support.
