Dumbbell Step-Up (High)

What you'll gain

  • Loads one leg at a time, correcting imbalances a two-leg squat can hide.

  • A taller box increases the range and shifts more work onto the glutes.

  • Adds lower-body load without a bar on the back.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

Hold a dumbbell in each hand with your arms hanging at your sides.

  2. 2

Stand facing a sturdy platform at about knee height with your feet hip-width apart.

  3. 3

Brace your abs and keep the chest tall.

  4. 4

Place one foot flat on the platform with the knee tracking over the second toe.

  5. 5

Press through that heel to stand tall on the box and bring the other foot up.

  6. 6

Step down with the trailing foot first, then the working foot, and repeat.

Common Mistakes

  • Pushing off the floor foot instead of driving through the leg on the box.

  • Driving through the toes rather than the heel, which cuts glute work.

  • Letting the knee fall inward as you rise.

  • Dropping back down off the box instead of lowering under control.

About This Exercise

The high dumbbell step-up is the loaded, taller-box version of a single-leg step. Holding a dumbbell in each hand, you plant one foot fully on a platform about knee height, press through that heel until the leg is straight, bring the trailing foot up, then step back down under control. The quadriceps and glutes produce the lift. A taller box deepens the starting hip angle and asks more of the glutes than a low step. In a catalog it is the loaded high rung of the step-up family, paired with the low dumbbell step-up. It fits unilateral leg-day blocks, dumbbell-only programs, and coaching pages on driving through the lead leg instead of bouncing off the floor foot.
