What you'll gain
Adds progressive load to trunk flexion in a way bodyweight crunches cannot.
Keeps constant tension on the abdominals through the whole range.
Easy to scale rep to rep by changing the pin, which suits programmed progression.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
Attach a rope to the high pulley and select a load you can control for ten to fifteen reps.
- 2
Kneel a couple of feet from the stack and hold the rope ends beside your head.
- 3
Set your hips over your knees and take the slack out of the cable so the abdominals are under tension.
- 4
Crunch the ribcage down toward the pelvis, rounding the spine and keeping the elbows fixed.
- 5
Pause at the shortest position and squeeze the abdominals hard.
- 6
Return to the start under control without letting the weight stack touch down.
Common Mistakes
Pulling the rope with the arms, which turns it into a lat exercise and unloads the abdominals.
Hinging at the hips instead of flexing the spine, which removes the crunch entirely.
Letting the load pull you upright between reps, which breaks tension at the top of every rep.
Going too heavy and bouncing out of the bottom, which replaces contraction with momentum.
About This Exercise
The kneeling cable crunch loads trunk flexion directly. You kneel facing a high pulley, hold a rope beside your head, and crunch the ribcage toward the pelvis so the rectus abdominis shortens against a constant cable load. It is an isolation movement for the abdominals with the obliques assisting, and the hips stay still and the elbows stay fixed so the motion comes from the spine rather than from pulling with the arms or rocking at the hip. As an asset this is the standard way to show loaded ab work in a gym-equipment library. It gives a hypertrophy program builder a progressive alternative to bodyweight crunches, and the cable stack in frame makes it immediately readable as a gym-based movement rather than a floor exercise.

Cable Side Bend
$4.99A standing cable side bend that loads the obliques against constant tension for a stronger, more defined waist.
Cable Standing Low To High Wood Chopper
$4.99A standing low-to-high cable chop that builds rotational power through the obliques and full midsection.
Cable Wood Chopper
$4.99A diagonal cable rotation that trains the obliques to drive force from a high anchor down across the body.
Pallof Press
$4.99A standing anti-rotation drill: hold a cable or band at chest height side-on and press it out without letting the torso turn.
Abdominals Stretch Variation Four
$4.99A stability-ball abdominal stretch that supports the spine through a controlled supine back extension.
Abdominals Stretch Variation One
$4.99A floor-based ab stretch that rises from forearm support into a cobra-style press-up to open the front of the core.
