Cable Pallof Press
What you'll gain
Trains the trunk to resist rotation in a standing, athletic stance.
Makes bracing errors easy to see as soon as the hands leave the chest.
Uses a standard cable stack, so it fits gym and app cable-core collections.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
Set a single handle on a cable pulley at mid-chest height.
- 2
Stand side-on to the stack, take the handle in both hands, and hold it at the center of the chest.
- 3
Step out until the cable is taut, with the feet about hip-width and the knees slightly bent.
- 4
Brace the trunk so the shoulders and hips face straight ahead.
- 5
Press the handle straight out until the elbows are extended, without letting the torso turn.
- 6
Pause, then bring the handle back to the chest under control, finish the set, and switch sides.
Common Mistakes
Using so much load that the near shoulder rotates toward the stack.
Letting the hands drift sideways instead of pressing straight from the sternum.
Flaring the ribs or arching the lower back as the arms extend.
Training only one side and skipping the turn-around set.
About This Exercise
The cable Pallof press is an anti-rotation core lift, not a chest press. You stand side-on to a mid-chest pulley, hold the handle at the sternum with both hands, then press it straight out and back while the cable tries to turn you toward the stack. The job is to keep the ribs and pelvis square. Obliques and abs are the primary muscles in this anti-rotation pattern. The same press-out from a cable or band puts the obliques on most of the anti-rotation work. This slug is the cable-stack version. The approved frame shows a selectorized tower and a single handle, so the equipment value is Cable Machine only. In a catalog it is the clearest way to show anti-rotation beside planks and woodchops.
