Dumbbell Walking Lunges
What you'll gain
Builds the quads, glutes, and hamstrings in a moving unilateral pattern.
Keeps the load at the sides, which reduces the forward lean common with a bar on the back.
Adds a balance and core demand that a stationary split squat does not.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
Stand tall with a dumbbell hanging at each side and the feet about hip-width apart.
- 2
Step forward with one leg and bend both knees until the back knee is close to the floor.
- 3
Keep the front shin roughly vertical and the torso upright over the hips.
- 4
Drive through the front foot to stand, then bring the trail leg through into the next step.
- 5
Alternate legs and keep walking forward for the set.
- 6
Do not let the dumbbells swing or the front knee collapse inward.
Common Mistakes
Taking a stride so short that the front knee shoots past the toes.
Leaning the trunk forward and leading the stand with the shoulders.
Letting the back knee slam the floor instead of stopping just above it.
Rushing the walk so the hips never settle at the bottom of each lunge.
About This Exercise
Dumbbell walking lunges take the split-stance lunge and travel forward instead of resetting in place. You step forward, drop both knees toward 90 degrees, then drive through the front foot and bring the trail leg through into the next stride. The lift is a compound quad-dominant pattern, Advanced, with the load hanging at the sides so the torso stays more upright than a barbell walking lunge. Secondary work lands on the glutes, hamstrings, calves, adductors, and trunk. The same forward step works the thighs, hips, and trunk. For a catalog this is the dumbbell walking-lunge clip, not a stationary split squat. It fills lunge filters, dumbbell-only lower-body days, and progression ladders that place walking lunges after reverse lunges and split squats.
